Corpus & AI: My Journey Designing a Lesson!
For this week's project, we have designed a teaching material and an ASSURE-based lesson plan focusing on countable and uncountable nouns. The assignment tasked us to create a worksheet with four activities, integrate both corpus tools and AI tools, and then reflect on the overall process. We made this task with my friends, Sude and Halil. You can find their blogs by clicking on their names.👍😁
In our worksheet, we did a brief warm-up where students had to guess whether certain nouns were countable or uncountable. The second activity asked them to observe real corpus examples from SKELL or COCA and to notice the appearance of determiners and plural endings inductively. The third activity contained some short production tasks, such as formulating sample sentences based on the rules they discovered. Lastly, Activity 4 introduced AI: students created a shopping list and a short dialogue, then asked an AI to act as a supermarket worker and correct their mistakes. This combination of traditional materials and technology is surprisingly effective.
Here is our material;
Our material!The hardest part during the design process was probably keeping the instructions clear, yet still making the tasks engaging; we needed to consider students' mixed proficiency levels and learning styles while choosing examples and interactive elements.
If this material were to be used in a real classroom, several issues may arise. The students may struggle with the corpus tools since they are unfamiliar with the conformation of concordance lines. The technical problems such as slow internet, availability of devices, or the AI tools being blocked, may disrupt the flow of the lesson. Some students might also depend too much on AI rather than self-correcting themselves.
Overall, this task helped me go deeper into material design and reflect on how technology can enhance language learning if it is used thoughtfully.
Thank you for reading, these tasks will get more and more engaging, I speak from the experience😍
See you then,
Love, Begüm!
